MORE THAN A MILLION PEOPLE, ORGANISATIONS, POLITICIANS AND GOVERNMENTS BACK THE FOSSIL FUEL TREATY. SUPPORT THE GLOBAL EFFORT TODAY.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative is a global alliance consisting of national governments, cities, states and regions, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, businesses, faith and health leaders, trade unions, youth activists, and more than one million individuals.

This powerful global network is united around a common call for negotiation of a treaty to manage a fast, fair and fully funded transition away from oil, gas and coal. Yet, every organisation and individual in this initiative is advocating in their own way based on country and context.

Getting involved with the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative ranges from national governments participating in diplomatic discussions regarding the legal, political and financial pathways to a just transition, to parliamentarians, local and sub-national governments calling on nation-states to act.

It also means individuals, organisations, businesses and faith communities plus many others adding their names to the growing list of people who have endorsed the concept of a Fossil Fuel Treaty, and are now campaigning for their local cities, sub-national or national governments to join the call to negotiate a Fossil Fuel Treaty.

There are many ways to be a part of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative. Find your pathway below.
National Governments

There are 18 national governments that have publicly shown support for a Fossil Fuel Treaty and are participating in discussions regarding pathways to a just transition and how a binding international agreement can play a role. Countries can act as observers of the process until willing to commit to action.

In addition, national governments can call for participation by other countries to join in discussions around a Fossil Fuel Treaty at the UN and other international meetings, as well as via media and social media. They can host regional and international diplomatic dialogues such as the First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels led by Colombia and The Netherlands, and work on domestic plans to phase out oil, gas and coal.

Subnational governments including cities, states, regions and territories on every continent of the globe have joined the call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty. Many are taking steps to phase out oil, gas and coal in their jurisdictions and are advocating for higher levels of government to take action. Calling on your local governments to endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal is a great way to take action locally.

Subnational Governments
Indigenous Peoples

The Indigenous People’s  workstream creates a distinct, Indigenous-centred space within the Treaty Initiative network, grounded in respect, transparency, reciprocity, and accountability. It recognises Indigenous Peoples as rights-holders under international law, including the right to self-determination, to their lands and territories, and to free, prior, and informed consent. The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative’s commitment to Indigenous Peoples’ struggle and support is reflected in a dedicated workplan developed with Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous organisations. The ultimate objective is to ensure Indigenous Peoples participate in shaping the proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty on an equal footing with nation states.
