Santa Marta 2026: Europe’s Path from Fossil Fuel Vulnerability to Energy Sovereignty
A strategic briefing on Europe’s Fossil Fuel Treaty campaign ahead of the First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels
Colombia and the Netherlands will host the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels. The Conference is designed as a space for countries, subnational governments and other stakeholders that recognize the need to implement a transition away from fossil fuels in a just, orderly and equitable manner, in line with climate goals and the best available science.
Europe stands at the center of this global turning point. As the fastest-warming continent, it faces a dual crisis: escalating climate disasters and an energy security framework shattered by geopolitical shocks from Ukraine to the recent Middle East war. Yet, within this vulnerability lies a unique opportunity and responsibility. Bearing nearly 19% of historical emissions and hosting industry giants like BP, Shell, and Total, Europe has the moral duty and the economic power to lead the global transition.
This webinar is a strategic briefing to mobilise the European network around this mandate. We will explore how to leverage the Santa Marta Conference to champion a binding Fossil Fuel Treaty, transforming Europe’s historical liability into diplomatic leadership.
