Indigenous Nations
Indigenous Peoples and organisations from multiple regions of the world are supporting the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative, reflecting a shared call to protect territories, biodiversity, cultures, and future generations from fossil fuel extraction.
The Fossil Fuel Treaty work commitment to Indigenous Peoples’ struggle and support is reflected in a dedicated workplan developed with Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous organisations. This workstream creates a distinct, Indigenous-centred space within the Treaty Initiative network, grounded in respect, transparency, reciprocity, and accountability. It recognises Indigenous Peoples as rights-holders under international law, including the right to self-determination, to their lands and territories, and to free, prior, and informed consent. The ultimate objective is to ensure Indigenous Peoples participate in shaping the future Fossil Fuel Treaty on an equal footing with nation states.
In the Amazon Basin, 11 Indigenous Nations and XXXX indigenous organisations from Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia are calling for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, bringing together communities on the frontlines of oil, gas, and mining extraction.
Beyond the Amazon, indigenous support extends to other regions of the Global South. In East Africa, the Maasai community of Kajiado County in Kenya has endorsed the call, highlighting the impacts of fossil fuel development on pastoralist livelihoods and ancestral lands. In South Asia, more than 25 Indigenous and community-based groups representing peoples affected by coal, oil, and gas extraction across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh in India have also expressed their support.
Together, these endorsements affirm a shared leadership among Indigenous Peoples, who have protected lands and life for centuries and continue to show the way forward toward a fossil fuel–free future. Rooted in indigenous knowledge systems and lived practice, this leadership calls for an end to fossil fuel expansion as the foundation for justice, resilience, and a livable future for all.
