Treaty launches new business engagement programme

Building on existing support from businesses, the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative is now officially launching our new business engagement programme, and is calling on more businesses to join the growing chorus of voices publicly calling for the development of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Momentum for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty continues to build rapidly, and now has the support of a bloc of six Pacific nation states - Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, Fiji, Niue, and the Solomon Islands, the World Health Organisation, the European Parliament, 101 Nobel Laureates, 600+ parliamentarians from 82 countries, 2,150 civil society organisations from 117 countries, 3,000+ scientists and academics, and 80+ major cities and subnational governments including LA, Kolkata, London, Lima, Paris, Hawai’i, Vancouver and Sydney, and the very recent support from the California Senate

The world now strives for healthy economies that run on resilient infrastructure and that provide good education, safe homes and better jobs. In a just transition, businesses need a clear direction of travel from governments to ensure new investments into renewable energy are protected, to challenge climate laggards, and to deliver finance and business action to decarbonise the world once and for all.

If we are to avoid overshooting 1.5ºC, and approach the climate crisis with the ambition, courage, and rapid action that it demands, a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is needed to provide clarity that ensures climate net zero commitments are underpinned by a global mechanism to permanently move away from fossil fuels and business as usual.

While net zero commitments are growing in number, their integrity is increasingly being challenged due to the limited impact in reducing absolute emissions to date and an over dependence on technologies that are not proven at scale and that don’t address the root cause of emissions, or other approaches that serve to delay or distract from real climate action.

Every industry, every organisation and every job depends on our climate remaining stable. By supporting the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, businesses are sending a clear signal to their stakeholders and policy makers that they are committed to moving away from fossil fuels, willing to advocate for ambitious climate action, and are playing an active role in preparing adequately for the transition ahead.

Business support for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is vital to ensuring a fast and fair transition, where no worker, community or country is left behind.
