Press Conference on Asia’s Roadmap for a Fossil-Free Future:
Asian leaders and climate justice advocates set expectations for the First Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels
Friday, April 17, 2026
11:30AM-12:30PM (Philippine time)
As ongoing global political conflicts, particularly between the US, Israel, and Iran, continue to disrupt global oil markets, driving prices higher and threatening Asia’s energy security, Asia’s heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels is acutely exposed to economic risks. This situation, however, presents an urgent opportunity to accelerate the renewable energy transition. Now more than ever, a regional shift away from fossil fuels and towards electrification and renewables can reduce vulnerability and promote sustainable growth.
The just transition is especially crucial for Asia, as the majority of its countries are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. In addition to facing escalating extreme weather events, disasters, and deepening inequality, these nations also grapple with severe financing gaps – particularly for adaptation, loss and damage, and a just energy transition.
This press conference, featuring government representatives and prominent civil society leaders, will discuss the following key issues:
Using energy security as a catalyst for fossil fuel phase out;
The need to finance the energy transition;
International cooperation for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, and
The necessity of a unified, regional voice at upcoming climate convenings such as the First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia, and COP31 in Antalya, Turkey.
